Hello everyone, just thought I should ask where I should start the process of joining the 501st. I live in Fort Wayne, and see you guys all the time. I've wanted to join for a long time but I've never really had the money to get a great costume until now. So what kind of costume should I get? Definitely going for a trooper rather than an officer, but other than that I'm not really sure. What kind of trooper would the garrison like to have? And what would be the estimated cost? Thanks very much for reading and helping me out. I'm hoping to formally apply in early July.

Welcome!

Research research research.

Take a look at the Costume Reference Library on the main Legion website and see what interests you to do. Then join the forums for the detachment that's designated for that costume and introduce yourself there just like you did here.

Detachment members will point you in the right direction for the costume you want to build, then members of our Garrison will help you along in the building process ;)

What Caleb said. Also give some thought to budget, comfort, and timing. While Vader and Boba Fett look great, they're very expensive and time-consuming costumes. Basic stormtroopers can't see, sit, or bend over very well. Scouts have a stunning amount of fabric and tend to get rather hot.

If your budget is tight, start with an Imperial Crewman or similar. It's often nice to have an open-face costume for hot days or for when the armored folks need help.

Don't worry about what we want to have; build a costume you'll love to wear, and we'll take you!

Deffenetly pick a costume you are into cause your gonna be the one wearing it! Like Topher and Caleb said each costume has there drawbacks and there benefits. The officers are the most comfortable to wear but the armored troopers get the most attention. The armor gets hot and so does the flight suit costumes like the stormtroopers and biker scouts. What are you interested in? We can guid you from there.

Welcome! ^ What they've said ^

I'm also new to the 501st and the Garrison. Just about ready to finish my first build, a reserve pilot (soft costume) which also fills the requirements for an imperial bridge crew and is also the base costume to 5 additional builds.

You're in good hands here. I've gotten great support, direction, and assistance from these guys and gals of the NDG! Keep asking questions, find a costume build you love, stick with the advice they'll give (trust me the advice is irreplaceable, and you'll enjoy every moment).

Pete

All the above is great advise so all I have to add is... Just because you don't have a costume and aren't an official member of the 501st yet doesn't mean you can't get involved with the garrison. We encourage you to come troop with us and get to know members and get involved with our activities while you build. We have a wide variety of talent and knowledge to help you out.

I did it too!! I wanted to get acquainted with how things worked before I got into armor. It was a good experience and less stress trying to figure out what to do how to act and just what being in armor is like.
I highly recommend going to these events to help!
